Baking Memories for 40 Years: A Sweet Tradition
For 40 years, Mildred “Millie” has been turning cakes, cookies and other sweet treats into memories for families throughout the community. What began as a passion for baking has grown into Momma Millie’s Bakery, a beloved local business that has become part of countless birthdays, graduations, weddings, and other special celebrations.
Originally operating as “Cakes by Mildred,” Millie’s business eventually took on the name customers know and love today. After marrying her husband and becoming part of a blended family, her husband’s grandmother would often tell the children, “You behave for Mama Millie.”
The nickname stuck.
Today, after 16 years at Momma Millie’s, Millie has baked for generations of local families – even creating wedding cakes for children of couples whose wedding cakes she made years earlier.
“I’m proud to say I’ve done second-generation weddings,” Millie shared.
A Love of Baking That Started Early
Millie’s love of baking began long before Momma Millie’s Bakery opened its doors. She grew up around the food business and was inspired by her father, who made pies and studied food preparation in school.
Her own baking journey started simply, with a Pillsbury cake mold. Millie and her father baked the cake together, and she decorated it herself. That experience sparked a passion that would eventually become a 40-year career.
And while the bakery has expanded its offerings over the years, Millie knows that sometimes the classics are still the best.
“Our number one cake is chocolate peanut butter, and it’s our number one cupcake,” she said. “You don’t need all these weird flavors. You want something good. Chocolate peanut butter is the way to go.”
As Momma Millie’s has grown, so has its team. Today, a full-time baker helps keep up with demand, allowing Millie to continue being the familiar face behind the bakery while still personally overseeing some of her specialties, including cheesecakes and carrot cakes.
More Than a Bakery
For Millie, being a local business owner means being part of the community – and she has seen that connection grow throughout her years in business.
When asked what being part of the community means to her, Millie described it as “like cheers, without the alcohol.” She may not remember every customer’s name, but she remembers what they order. More importantly, she remembers their milestones.
She has watched families come in for birthday cakes and graduation treats, only to see those same families return years later for wedding cakes. Over time, customers become more than customers – they become familiar faces and part of the bakery’s story.
“We’re blessed,” Millie said. That sense of gratitude has helped shape the way she approaches her business. Like many small businesses, Momma Millie’s has faced rising costs and the challenges that come with running a business. But Millie has remained committed to providing quality products at a fair price and treating her customers right.
Her philosophy is simple: do good work, take care of people, and give them a reason to come back.
“If you do a good job, people will come back,” she said. “The Lord blesses me, and my business continues.” After four decades, it’s clear that philosophy has served her well.
Giving Back, One Sweet Treat at a Time
Being part of the community is just as important to Millie as serving her customers.
Momma Millie’s regularly supports local fundraisers by donating gift certificates, cookies, and cupcakes to organizations working to make a difference in the community.
The bakery also serves as a collection point for community causes, including the Kiwanis Coats for Kids program. Millie regularly displays signs in the bakery window highlighting current donation drives and ways customers can help.
For Millie, supporting the community is simply part of being a local business.
A Little Local Fame
Momma Millie’s has even had its share of unexpected local fame.
One of the bakery’s most memorable moments came when Jersey Shore was filming in the area. It was a Monday, and the bakery was closed when Millie received a call asking her to come in.
Her response? “I was like, no, I’m not open.” The caller insisted she was.
Not knowing who was on the other end of the phone, Millie eventually found herself welcoming Pauly, Vinny, and Mike “The Situation” into Momma Millie’s to pick up a custom cake featuring a familiar Jersey Shore reference: “STAAAHHP” written in icing across the top.
It was an unexpected experience – and one that gave this local bakery a fun little brush with television fame.
